Sensor-based traffic counting and classification systems embedded in the road surface. These generally provide better-quality data, but their working life depends on the surface where they are installed. They can be installed in asphalt or concrete, and are either inductive or piezoelectric. In addition, KINEO offers turnkey solutions for traffic counting in any country where it is needed.



Inductive loops detect the metal mass of the vehicle as it approaches the sensor. They are installed in a loop-to-loop configuration to count, classify and calculate speed, or only one loop per lane for simple counting.

Loop-to-loop traffic counting allows the speed to be calculated from the time when the first loop is activated and the second loop is disabled. We know the distance between those two points, meaning we also know the speed. Speed and time give us the length of the vehicle.

Some types of traffic counting devices also analyse the loop profile, which is the shape of the waveform generated by different metal masses. This is how we distinguish a 14-metre bus from a 14-metre truck. Same length, but different metallic trace (different sized axles, chassis, engine position, etc.). This is how we can detect, for example, the EURO6.

We have data mining software or provide database integration in the customer’s environment. All with real-time Ethernet or GPRS transmission with minute-by-minute intervals for complete traffic counting.



When more transport classes need to be detected, a piezoelectric sensor must be added to the two loops to additionally detect the number and distance between axles and thus obtain the proper axle configuration. For example, to distinguish between a 5-axle truck and a 3-axle truck with a 2-axle trailer.

The configuration would be loop-piezo sensor-loop, and the piezo does not need to take up the entire width of the lane, since detecting one side of the vehicle is enough to determine the number and arrangement of its axles. On roads with 2, 3 or more lanes, the length of the piezoelectric sensors is calculated by the width of each lane and the maximum gap that can be left between the piezos of the adjacent lanes so a vehicle does not fit between them and is not detected.

With loops and piezo sensor we can detect 10, 15, 20 or more different types by adapting the ETD to the classification table of each country, as we have already done in Portugal (up to 25 classes) or in Kuwait (up to 13 classes), for example.

For 12 years, KINEO has been installing traffic counting systems for the Ministry of Development, governments in the Spanish regions, provincial councils, etc., either directly or as suppliers to construction and engineering companies, since we have standards-based signalling equipment.

We work with ADR (SABRE and 2000) and HITRAC traffic counting systems according to the customer or the data recipient. We are the leading importers of ADRs and have a repair workshop in Spain. We are also experts in software for this equipment, solar powered and non-solar powered cabinets, data integration, etc.
